SUSTAINABILITY
As a Forum
Our members recognise the importance of implementing comprehensive sustainability strategy, and the vital role that we, as bulk food importers, have in shaping the implementation of sustainability measures within the sector.
Our members utilise the following sustainability practices:
Responsible sourcing: Our members are committed to working with suppliers that share our environmentally conscious values and ambitions.
Supply chain mapping: Our members monitor and verify our supply chains to ensure that our imports are free from deforestation, illegal activities and unethical labour practices.
NDPE commitments and partnering: Our members participate in industry wide organisations such as the RSPO, and actively seek to procure from suppliers who are also members, or who have openly and publicly committed to No Deforestation, No Peatland and No Worker Exploitation (NDPE) principles.
On the farm
Complementary feed is an effective way to reduce the amount of methane an animal generates – NZBFIF helps farmers to reduce methane by decreasing feed intake without compromising animal welfare or productivity.
Most methane generated by ruminants is belched out into the atmosphere. The amount emitted varies between individual animals; however, the quantity, quality, and type of feed affects the energy, nitrogen, and minerals available to the microorganisms in the animal’s rumen and affects the amount of methane it generates.
Complementary feeds and other supplements offer a nutritionally balanced diet that encourages the growth and activity of the microorganisms in the rumen. This in turn lowers a farm system’s emissions intensity (emissions per unit of product) by optimising production and by enhancing an individual animal’s ability to convert dry matter into protein.
